Chronic Illnesses

Chronic illnesses affect millions of people and there are thousands of illnesses out there. Things like lung cancer and black lung have long lasting affects and harm the people who are diagnosed with it. Other illnesses like genetic ones are passed down from your parents. No matter what the illnesses is, there is always worry. Woman are most afraid of chronic illness. About 70% of all people diagnosed with rheumatism are woman and then there is also worry for long lasting illnesses such as Alzheimer's. In my opinion chronic illness is a terrible no matter what disease due to its long lasting affects. Hopefully, there will be cures in the future for these types of diseases. I think that this topic should be looked at more by scientists. I have seen what these affects can do be cause my grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer's when i was young and pasted away about two years later. In conclusion, these diseases are fatal and caused pain to many and will hopefully be taken in to great consideration in the future.

Science and Books


Everlost

Currently i am reading a terrific novel, Everlost, a book. This story is about two children(nick and Allie) who are almost killed in a car accident and are trapped in a world between the living and the dead. This imaginary world is called Everlost. I can related this book to science because there are many people who believe in this world which is where the ghosts and paranormal live. People try to prove this by taking their high tech cameras, videos, heat sensors and much more. They travel to places that are said to be haunted and set up all of their equipment their. They capture footage and voices which they use to support their scientific evidence that it is fact. I believe that there are ghosts although i have never experienced any paranormal events. This is a excellent book which i believe you should read and you can give your own scientific opinion on the living and the dead!

Extra credit question.

Christopher Columbus





While thinking about this quote ,"In science the credit goes to the man who convinces the world, not to the man to whom the idea first occurred" by Sir William Osler I began to believe that is could have several reasons why he thought of this. First off, many people are struck with genius hypothesis or true facts, which people and other scientist believe are untrue. For example, most people believed the world was flat and if you sailed to far in a direction you could fall off it. Others believed that the earth was round because in ancient Greece when a European , Aristotle gazed up at the moon at night, he realized that the earth cast a spherical shadow on the moon. Some accepted his idea but mostly everyone denied this and thought he was crazy. It was until the time of Columbus was this hypothesis proven. Due to Columbus's vast voyages across and around the world he proved to people that it was round because he did not fall off the Earth and showed that there were other continents than Europe, Asia, and Africa. Even thought Aristotle came up with the idea hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus was even born, this fact wasn't taken into society until Columbus convinced the world. On the other hand, even if a man convinces the world that doesn't always mean the first person to come up with the idea wont receive the credit. I believe that this quote is very true but is wrong because the man or woman who first came up with the idea and supported it with information should receive the credit. I n conclusion this is a proper example of the quote thought up of from Sir William Osler.

Fish Toxin that Could Cure Cancer Cells


In 2001 a toxin called euglenophycin had killed over 21,000 fish in a hatchery in North Carolina. When a Microbiologist, (Paul.v.Zimba) went to take samples on the water, he found that there was a large amount of this toxin(euglenophycin) in the water . This toxin is acutely known as type of algae that can form in ponds or lakes. Ironically this was the first reported case known. The powerful and deadly toxin is what caused the death of the fish and made the hatchery to lose about 100,000 dollars. Although this was an unfortunate event, it was later found out that small amounts of euglenophycin decreased the amount of cancer cell growth and even killed cells. Cancer researchers would like to research further into seeing how this affects tumor growth. I believe that a finding such as this, could be possibly a cure or at least a strong medicine to fight cancer. For people who have been diagnosed with cancer, they should research about this toxin because it could one day save their life. Cancer is a disease when a group of cells have an uncontrolled growth. Therefore, if euglenophyin kills cells, this may help to control all different types of cancer. In conclusion, This toxin may one day led to the cure of cancer.

Ghost Shark


For millions of years, a fish, closely related to a shark has been lurking in the deep waters where explorers couldn't find them. Recently the scarce fish had been found off the coast of southern California. The black ghost shark, also called Hydrolagusmelanophasma has been the first of its kind to been seen in California waters since 1947. Amazingly, This fish is the oldest group of fish known today! Also, these incredible fish lived through the time of the dinosaurs with out changing through time. Scientists want to have more explorations into the deep water of south California in order to find more about them. I believe that explorations to find out more of this unknown shark like fish are extremely necessary. In conclusion, this amazing fish has survived for million of years and should live for many more since it lives were scintist cannont reach it.
